Discover the Power Within You
Awakening to the Divine Potential Already Within Us
What if the Wisdom, Strength, Love, Peace, and Guidance we seek are not somewhere outside of us, waiting to be earned or bestowed, but instead, are already present—quietly awaiting our recognition and expression? This is the transforming invitation at the heart of the late Rev. Eric Butterworth’s spiritual classic, Discover the Power Within You. Beginning next month, October, the Spiritual Café of the South Jersey Shore will explore this powerful book through a series of four monthly virtual spiritual gatherings.
Eric Butterworth was one of Unity’s most beloved ministers, teachers, and authors. His message was both profound and practical: Jesus did not come merely to demonstrate a spiritual capacity that belonged to him alone. Jesus revealed what is possible when a person becomes fully awake to the presence of God within.
The “power within” is not the force of the human ego, and it does not mean that we must manage life entirely through our own effort. It is the divine life, wisdom, love, and creative possibility of God expressing in and through us. We do not create this sacred potential; we awaken to it. We learn to trust it, cooperate with it, and give it expression through the way we think, speak, choose, love, and live.
In Unity, we often use the word God. Throughout our conversations, you may also hear words such as Spirit, Source, Divine Mind, Infinite Presence, Universal Love, or Creative Energy. We do not suggest that these words are identical in every spiritual tradition. Rather, we use them as different ways of pointing toward the ultimate Reality – the Presence and Creative Power of Life which we live and which expresses though us.
From Knowing Spiritual Truth to Living It
During our recent monthly gatherings, we explored Unity’s Five Principles and considered what it means to live Spiritual Truth in our thoughts, words, beliefs, and actions. Butterworth’s book offers a natural next step. It invites us to ask: What happens when we truly believe that the Presence of God is within us? How does that understanding change the way we see ourselves? How might it change the way we meet difficulties, pray, forgive, love, serve, and participate in the world?
Many of us have learned to look outside ourselves to others for approval, direction, security, or evidence of our worth. We may tell ourselves that we must wait for circumstances to improve before allowing ourselves to experience peace. We may believe we will become spiritually whole only after correcting everything we perceive to be wrong with us.
However, Butterworth turns that understanding around. Our spiritual journey is not about becoming divine someday. It is about awakening to the divine nature already planted within us and allowing it to unfold. Just as the potential of a great tree is contained within a seed, our potential for Love, Wisdom, Peace, Courage, wholeness, and abundant living is already present. The question is not whether the potential exists. The question is: are we willing to recognize and express it?
A Four-Part Spiritual Journey
Over four gatherings, we will explore the book as a living spiritual experience rather than simply reviewing it chapter by chapter. We will begin by considering the great discovery of our divine potential and what the Christ within means for us today. We will then explore the transforming power of consciousness—how spiritual perception can help us see ourselves, other people, and life’s circumstances differently.
Our third gathering will focus on putting the power within to work through prayer, love, forgiveness, nonresistance, faith, and healing consciousness. Finally, we will consider what it means to live from within out—expressing abundance, unity, purpose, compassion, and light in our relationships and in the wider world.
Each gathering will include a brief presentation, personal reflection, meaningful conversation, and an experiential spiritual practice. Participants will leave with something concrete to contemplate or practice during the following month.
Come As You Are
Reading Discover the Power Within You is encouraged, but it is not a requirement for participating. You do not need to have read every chapter, and you do not need to consider yourself a student of Unity. Bring your questions, your experiences, your curiosity, and your willingness to explore.
The Spiritual Café is not about having all the answers. It is a welcoming place where we can listen deeply, reflect honestly, learn from one another, and grow together.
Perhaps there is a dream within you that has been waiting for your attention. Perhaps you are meeting a change or challenge that calls for a deeper spiritual response. Perhaps you sense that there is more love, wisdom, creativity, or purpose seeking expression through your life.
Whatever brings you, you are welcome. The world does not merely need us to recognize the Light within. It needs us to let that Light shine. Join us as we discover, awaken, and express the power within.
