Thoughts Shape Experience: A Reflection on the Third Unity Principle

There is a quiet space within each of us… a space that observes, notices, and becomes aware. Within that space, something powerful is always happening—we are thinking.

In Unity, the Third Principle gently reminds us: our thoughts help shape our experience. This is not about blame. It is an invitation into awareness.

The Power of Thought

Many of us have been taught that life happens to us. Yet Unity invites us to look deeper.

How we interpret events…how we respond…how we see ourselves within them…

all shape our lived experience.

Charles Fillmore wrote:“Thought is formative; it shapes substance.”(Christian Healing)

Thought participates in the experience of life.

Awareness, Not Control

When we hear that thoughts shape experience, it can feel overwhelming.

But Unity does not ask us to control every thought. It invites us to become aware.

Awareness creates space. And within that space… there is choice.

Eric Butterworth reminds us:“We become what we believe about ourselves.”(Discover the Power Within You)

You Are Not Your Thoughts

Thoughts arise.They move.They pass.

But there is something within you that notices them.

That awareness is deeper than any thought.

And in that awareness…you are free to choose.

The Gentle Practice

This is not about perfection. It is about noticing.

Pause and ask:

What am I believing right now?

Not to judge.Just to see.

“I am not my thoughts.I am the awareness choosing them.”

Reflection

Take a quiet moment:

• What recurring thought has been shaping my experience?

• Is it true?

• Is there another way to see this?
